The 5M22413 Major Award Certificate in Early Learning and Care and 6M22411 Major Award Advanced Certificate in Early Learning and Care is a combined two year QQI Level 5 and Level 6 programme for learners who want to build a meaningful career in childcare, early years education, and Early Learning and Care practice.
This blended learning programme supports learners to develop the knowledge, skills, and reflective practice needed to work with babies, toddlers, and young children in a caring, inclusive, and professional way. Across the programme, learners explore child development, children’s rights, holistic care, curriculum, play, inclusion, equity, professional practice, leadership, supervision, and the wider policy and practice context of Early Learning and Care.
The course is designed to be practical, supportive, and achievable over 24 months, with a combination of self-paced online learning, scheduled tutorials, Trainer support, and assessment preparation. It is suitable for individual learners starting or developing a career in childcare, as well as employers, early years services, schools, and employment services supporting learners into the Early Learning and Care sector.
This course may be suitable for you if you are looking to build a career in Early Learning and Care, childcare, preschool education, or early years services.
It may be particularly suitable for:
This programme is designed to be welcoming for learners who are new to the sector, while also supporting those who already have experience and wish to strengthen their professional knowledge, confidence, and practice.
Access to the Programme
This programme is designed to be accessible to learners preparing for, entering, or already working in Early Learning and Care settings.
The blended learning format gives learners access to a structured online Learning Management System, alongside scheduled virtual or in-person tutorials. This allows learners to work through course content at their own pace while still having opportunities to engage with their Trainer, ask questions, prepare for assessment, and apply learning to real early years practice.
Tutorials focus on discussion, assessment preparation, and practical application of learning. Learners are encouraged to take an active part in their learning and to use the available supports throughout the programme.
A typical weekly commitment is approximately 5–8 hours, depending on the learner’s pace, assessment schedule, and stage of the programme.
Entry Criteria
This course is open to individuals who are working in, preparing to work in, or interested in building a career in Early Learning and Care, childcare, preschool, education, or child and family support settings.
Learners should have an interest in working with babies and young children and a willingness to engage in professional learning, reflective practice, and assessment work. Previous experience in childcare, education, care, or support settings may be beneficial, but learners who are newer to the sector are also welcome.
As this is a combined Level 5 and Level 6 programme, learners should be prepared to complete academic and practical learning over an extended period. Current professional experience, relevant voluntary experience, or prior study may support learners in applying theory to practice.
Where placement, practice-based tasks, or workplace-based evidence are required, learners may need access to an appropriate Early Learning and Care setting. Specific placement or assessment requirements will be confirmed as part of the programme guidance.
